Favorites or Idiots?

The 10 Returning "Favorites" were announced in January.  I was disappointed to see many of the names.  I'm not a fan to begin with of returning players, but this season's crop seems to be people who are not favorites but whiners and coasters and boneheads.

Here's my assessment in order of their first appearance on Survivor.

Survivor: 16 Micronesia -- Fans vs. Favorites"

Erik Reichenbach--Erik best known for giving away the Immunity Idol, in order to be voted out by the 4 remaining women.  Although he coasted at times, he won 3 straight Individual Immunity Necklaces and potentially could have won more had he not made the boneheaded move.   Clearly he would have needed to win all of the remaining Immunity Challenges to have a chance.   Erik is probably the best choice from the Fan side of Micronesia to come back.

  Survivor:  17 Gabon 

Corinne Kaplan--Due to editing, you never know if you see the real people on many seasons of Survivor, but Corinne several times stated her hate and disdain for most of her fellow players in Gabon including her exit.  She got into her 4 person alliance from the beginning, but wasn't calling the shots and was powerless when they started falling.  Maybe Corinne learned a little bit of  compassion in the past few years, but I doubt it.   Think this is one of the worst players they could have brought back (but not the worst.)
Survivor:  21 Nicaragua

 Brenda Lowe--Brenda was the self-proclaimed "King of LaFlor"  where she and Sash masterminded their way right out.  Once again, editing may have made her more loathesome than she really is, but I for one could go without ever seeing her again.   But since she is in, let's see if she changes her game.   And remember, that was the season that "Fabio" won, so if she was King, she was king of the idiots.

Survivor:  22 Redemption Island
Phillip Sheppard
Andrea Boehlke
Francesca Hogi 
Okay, Phillip I get as entertainment value, even though I don't care for that kind of character, and Andrea probably deserves a second chance for latching onto the only guy who was voted out 3 times in the same season of Survivor (Redemption Island IMO, was a total flop).    But why oh why would you bring back Francesca with Phillip when the two were at odds the entire 3 days they were on together.  Are they expecting those two to get along this time?
Survivor:  23 South Pacific
Brandon Hantz
Dawn Meehan 
John Cochran 
The Hantz infatuation continues, and Brandon's act on South Pacific including woman hating because they are beautiful along with a meltdown, should preclude him from coming back.    Please Survivor producers, let this be the last Hantz ever.   Dawn is a decent choice, and Cochran a self-proclaimed Survivor fan, made a huge mistake by going from #6 on one team to #7 on the other, leaving him less of a shot at the title.   Probably one of the physically weakest men to ever play Survivor.

 Survivor: 25 Phillipines  
Malcolm Freberg 
Probably the only real "Favorite" (although Dawn and arguably Brenda could also be considered Favorites) but the problem with Malcolm is that none of the Fans had ever seen him play before they started taping.  Rumor has it Malcolm was a late replacement for Tarzan or Troyzan from One World.  

 So on with the Show, but please don't call it Fans vs. "Favorites"--They may be fans, but the other side is not favored.

Survivor 44--Final Seven

Although I am enjoying the cast of Survivor 44, I can't say I'm enjoying the season.  In the opening episode, a blunt force head trauma at 8:20 into the episode eliminating one promising character on Tika--Bruce and a rock climbing injury at 41:30, that had a lingering effect on Matthew on Ratu led to the first immunity challenge requiring the ridiculous strength of  six people being played with five and eventually four on Ratu as Brandon who had performed the Sweat challenge with Matthew who had to sit out the challenge because of his arm. Ratu unsurprisingly lost the challenge, and Soka at full strength won, which led to the first of four straight women being voted off, prior to the merge.  Matthew and Bruce were the only men to leave before going to the combined beach.   The abundance of advantages/losses, idols and fake advantages were overdone this season, and the tribe "swap" was too fixed. Episode 4 "Dirty Deed" Preview

One postscript from last week's episode.  The end result was not  unlike the rock draw in other seasons and someone deserving to stay, like Jessica last season was lost from the game.    As painful as it was to watch Malcolm leave, it's part of the game.  If J.T. hadn't done what he did, then perhaps it would have been Sierra that left the game. Tonight, Debbie appears to go berserk and get crazy with Brad and Tai, which usually means she stays.  After the twists of the first three weeks, who knows what this week's twist will be and how it will affect the game.
