Premise: Players were immersed into the culture of the the tribes of Vanuatu.
Vanuatu had a unique opening in that the ship carrying the castaways were greeted by the tribesmen coming out from the beach. One of the boats carried Jeff Probst to the ship. He told them they were getting into the culture of the island. They then were put onto the boats and taken to the island where they were greeted by more tribesman with spears. They were then split into men and women, where the men were given Kava to drink and were generally treated to the culture, while the women were ignored. A live pig was brought out and killed. Finally a "good luck" stone was placed at the top of a greased pole, and the men were given the opportunity to retrieve it. Brady retrieved it on the first try and the men were awarded the rock.
Yasur was the women, Lopevi was the men. This was the 2nd time Gender divided the tribes (Amazon in 6 was the first.) Despite being snubbed at the initial festival, the women won immunity and fire when Chris could not navigate the balance beam.
Both tribes had an older/younger split. Twila on the women's tribe went to work on the shelter, while the young ones took frequent breaks. Mia and Twyla had several arguments about this.
The men sensing that they would be extinct, averted getting Chris voted out and took out Brook in the first Tribal Council. The 2nd immunity went to the men, and many of the women thought Dolly was running the show. In a showdown between LeAnn and Dolly, Dolly was sent home when Eliza spliit from the younger women.
The third immunity resulted in each tribe sending someone home. Lopevi won the reward, then John K. won the Individual immunity. He was sent to the other tribe to spend the day with the other tribe and gave Ami the Immunity for the women. This time Lisa changed sides and took out Mia.
After the men lost the 3rd Immunity and voted out Brady, the next morning there was a volcanic eruption and an earthquake. Then the tribes were switched. Scout and Sarge were chiefs, Scout divided the players and Sarge chose his Tribe. Lisa who was not chosen, got to choose and chose new Yasur.
Yasur had a 5-2 Woman advantage, and Lopevi had a 4-2 Man advantage. Yasur lost the next two challenges and voted off Bubba first, followed by Lisa, who became the last woman voted before 5 men were voted off in a row. This left Chris with the final 6 women.
Prior to the merge, John P. was voted off by Lotevi as he wasn't contributing to the tribe. There was one more reward challenge that Lopevi won Cookies, Milk and Cake. The merge happened at the immunity challenge. After Sarge won, Rory returned to the men's alliance, then both sides thought they had Twila and Julie on their side. In a straight gender vote, Rory was voted out 6-4.
The next three immunies went to Ami (twice) and Twila, so in the next two tribals, the women voted out Sarge and Chad. With 6 women and only Chris left from the men.
Scout started working with the men and Twila with 8 left targeting Eliza first, but Ami stopped them and only the two men voted for Eliza. The loved ones participated in the next Immunity challenge that Ami won. Chris told his fiance that he was going home that night. But LeAnn didn't feel right about voting Chris off, and wanted to vote Eliza off. Twila put a bug in Chris' ear to get Eliza on board to vote with Twila, Scout, and Chris. Eliza was skeptical, but went with them to vote off Leann.
The four ran to the final four where Eliza was voted off, and then Chris won final immunity and took Twila with him over Scout. Chris won the final vote 5-2 to achieve an improbably victory in an era without hidden immunity idols.
This was not the most exciting cast, and was predictable at times, evidenced by the Final Tribal, where Eliza and Julie, and Leann started out with self-centered questions. Ami as the 4th questioner asked the first game question. The big double cross at 7 was a huge turning point which both Twila and Chris primarily engineered. Ami despite claiming she lost respect for Twila, still voted for her along with Scout, while the others voted for Chris.
