I have watched every season of Survivor, some more than once, but in no season, did I stop watching the show. I stopped watching this season twice. I originally thought I wasn't going to watch it at all, since I'm not a big fan of either Sandra or Boston Rob and seeing the statues created for them in the previews made me cringe. But when the time came I did start watching. The cringe worthiness got worse and I still have not seen the last episode.
Let's start with the Island of the Idols. The edit made Rob and Sandra a big part of the show even though they weren't competing against each other or the other 20. They attended Tribal Councils in secret and made many comments to each other that were broadcast. In addition the Island visits seemingly had no rhyme or reason to them and ultimately had little effect on the game.
There were 9 visits to the Island prior to the the final 5 moving there on Day 36.
There were 8 Challenges. with 5 wins, 2 losses and 1 did not play. The 9th person, Jamal, lost by finding the message that sent him to the Island, and made a fake legacy advantage for Dean. Dean also won the final 5 immunity Idol.
Here's how it affected the game:
Elizabeth, Noura and Jamal lost votes at TC, none of them affected the overall vote.
Kellee, Vince, and Lauren won Idols. Kellee and Vince left the game without playing them, and Lauren played hers but got no votes.
Janet did not play the challenge.
Jamal gave Dean a fake legacy advantage that was not played, but Dean created a fake of the fake and tried to play it.
Dean successfully played the Idol Nullifier against Janet (who had an Idol outside of the IofI)
Dean did not play the final 5 Idol found on the Island.
Net effect of the Island of the Idol twist: 1 Idol Nullifier. But it gave Rob and Sandra a lot of screen time which took away from the actual game. But in the end that was a blessing.
From Day 1--People had issues with Dan and his touching. Both Molly and Kellee complained about it in Confessionals. At the merge on Day 20, this became a big enough issue again, that a Producer actually spoke to Kellee in a broadcast confessional, and then met with the contestants and gave Dan warning about his behavior. It got even more bizarre, as a few days later Missy and Elizabeth, both admitted that their complaints weren't real and was part of their game strategy.
This is where I first stopped watching. Earlier, Survivor tried to make social justice moments off of an offhand comment referring to a buff as a Du-rag, and led to a 5 minute schooling by Jamal about it. This may have been a precursor to what was coming, but at the time and since it seems a little over the top.
Karishma came into the game and was a woe is me character from early on. She seemed to want attention, but also removed herself from situations and attributed it to her cultural/religious background. She also complained about being bullied by Missy and her first tribe not caring about her when she cut herself. She pretty much whined the entire time through her time which was way too long at 32 days.
I did resume watching about 3 weeks later and caught up on the post-merge episodes, and two weeks later, Production finally removed Dan from the game--on Day 36 because of an incident involving a non-player.
As I said before I dd not watch the final episode or the reunion.
Tommy was a worthy winner, but this was by far the least entertaining season of Survivor ever.
